How to care for your piercing:
WASH your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap prior to cleaning or touching your piercing for any reason.
CLEAN your piercing at least twice a day. Use an unscented antibacterial soap and clean the front and back of your piercing thoroughly with a Q-TIp. For certain placements it may be easier to apply this soap solution using a clean cotton ball. ** Do not clean your piercing with harsh soaps, or soaps with dyes, fragrance or triclosan.**
SOAK your piercing with Epsom salt solution. We provide complimentary Epsom salt for you to take home. Make a solution of Epsom salt and warm water, soak a cotton ball or 2 cotton swabs in the mixture, and hold directly on your piercing for 30 seconds. This soaking will relieve irritation and soften any crust, dried blood or debris that have formed so you can gently remove them without irritating or traumatizing your new piercing.
RINSE thoroughly to remove all traces of soap and salt from the piercing. It is not necessary to rotate the jewelry through the piercing as this may cause a tunnel of scar tissue.
DRY by gently patting with clean paper towels. Always use disposable paper products because cloth towels can harbor bacteria and snag on jewelry, causing injury or infection.
What is normal?:
Initially: some bleeding, localized swelling, tenderness or bruising.
During healing: some discoloration, itching, secretion of a whitish-yellowish fluid (NOT PUS) that will form some crust on the jewelry. The tissue may tighten around the jewelry as it heals.
Once healed: the jewelry may not move freely in the piercing; do not force it. If you fail to include cleaning your piercing as a part of your daily hygiene routine, normal but smelly bodily secretions may accumulate.
A piercing may seem healed before the healing process is complete. This is because tissue heals from the inside, and although it feels fine, the interior remains fragile. Be patient, and keep cleaning throughout the entire healing period.
Even healed piercings can shrink or close in minutes after having been there for years. This varies from person to person; if you like your piercing keep jewelry in and do not leave your piercing empty.
